Tough Guise: Violence, Media&the Crisis in Masculinity
http://... the social construction of femininity has been widely examined, the dominant role of masculinity has until recently remained largely invisible. Tough Guise is the first educational video geared toward college and high school students to systematically examine the relationship between pop-cultural imagery and the social construction of masculine identities in the U.S. at the dawn of the 21st century. In this innovative and wide-ranging analysis, Jackson Katz argues that widespread violence in American society, including the tragic school shootings in Littleton, Colorado, Jonesboro, Arkansas, and elsewhere, needs to be understood as part of an ongoing crisis in masculinity. This exciting new media literacy tool-- utilizing racially diverse subject matter and examples-- will enlighten and provoke students (both males and females) to evaluate their own participation in the culture of contemporary masculinity.

That video was spot on for the most part. The lack of citation regarding the statistics hurts it a bit though.

WOW hold on a sec, Disney? is not promoting bad boy images. it may show them but under it all it will show that being caring and understanding is the key forward. forgetting your problems and doing what is right and not doing wrong. show me a disney movie that portrays a masculine dominance that is in the good guy role. i bet you they are learning that the right thing to do is in there hearts or not doing what the bad guy would do etc.

the tough guy image comes from the fact that a man or males of many living things should be able to protect their families from predators. its definitely a learned behaviour and can definitely be chnged through generations by being told this just like kids are told about being the tough guy. unfortuantly in the society we live in a lot of people have to adobpt this tough guy image depending on where they live or they will become the weak in their own society and will suffer for it.

The thing I found really strange when he came up with his statistics is the clear lack of references. If you pay attention enough, you will noticed not a single reference has been mentioned. No FBI or any other crime stats bureau as you correctly mentioned. Only that fact makes me suspicious about the integrity of the guy doing the video because in a debate, you have to mention your references. If not, you are not trustworthy and that's why I can't trust him.

The only statistic you need for the middle portion of this...the statistics portion...is this one: 95% LIES! These statistics are completely bogus. This guy must have gotten his data from some feminist thinktank, because they sure didn't come from the FBI or any other crime stats bureau.
