Actually that this is even a issue of debate only reinforces the notion to the rest of the world that as a nation of people we really are provincial as a culture.Outside the US for most countries a civil marriage is recognized as being legal. By taking the right of a church to make a marriage legal it would reinforce the idea that it's the government and not the church that governs the people. Further it would go a long way in keeping the church and state separate.

It was very close, but they do have "marriage" in the form of civil unions. I think the state should go after those churches that violated tax exempt status; that will fix our budget deficit.
