Eva Perón

María Eva Duarte de Perón (May 7, 1919 -- July 26, 1952) was the second wife of Argentine President Juan Domingo Perón (1895--1974) and the First Lady of Argentina from 1946 until her death in 1952. She is often referred to as simply Eva Perón, or by the affectionate Spanish language diminutive Evita, which literally translates into English as "Little Eva".Born out of wedlock in rural Argentina in 1919, at age 15 Eva Duarte made her way to the nation's capital of Buenos Aires where she pursued a career as a stage, radio, and film actress. Eva met Colonel Juan Perón in 1944 at a charity event in San Juan, Argentina. The two married in 1945. Eva Perón became involved in Argentine politics in 1946 shortly after Juan Perón's first election as President of Argentina. Over the course of the next six years, Eva Perón became powerful within the Pro-Peronist trade unions. Eventually, she founded the charitable Eva Perón Foundation, and the nation's first large-scale female political party, the Female Peronist Party. In 1951, Eva Perón expressed a desire to be allowed to run for the office of Vice-President of Argentina. In this bid she received great support from the Peronist political base, low-income Argentines referred to as descamisados or "shirtless ones." However, opposition from the nation's military and elite, as well as her declining health, ultimately prevented Eva Perón's candidacy. In 1952, shortly before her death, Eva Perón was given the official title of "Spiritual Leader of the Nation".

Yeah, pretty ironic. That thought didn't escape me when I read her biograhy twenty years ago.

Too bad it took over 20 years to finally make, because I think Meryl Streep would of been a better Eva Perron than Madonna. JMHO.Too bad Eva didn't live in the present, she wouldn't of been made fun of for being illigitmate or poor. She probably could of been the President of Argentina just like she probably secretly wanted to be.How ironic she was so powerful of a woman, only to live in a chauvanistic society that held her down because she was a lowly woman from the wrong side of the tracks.

Yes I think her story was very fasinating too. I feel really sorry for her. She had a rough life. Her family was very poor and she was mad fun of as a child. But I did like the movie. It brought Eva to life like no one else was able to do. She became a real person not just a legend. I thought Madonna was great in that role.

Are you kidding me? In the age of the Internet I would expect someone to google SOMETHING before they respond with indignation.Eva Peron died of cancer, cervical cancer. It is now known that strains of cervical cancer are caused by a virus which is transmitted sexually. There IS a vaccine available in the US that parents can give their daughters to protect them against this cancer but it's only effective against ~60% of the strains of the virus. But that is the most common strain.

I don't care who sings this song, I still don't like it. I wasn't impressed with the music or the movie with Madonna, I'm sorry to say. I found the music sort of on the boring side.Again, I'm sorry for all you Evita lovers out there. However, I find Eva Perron a very fascinating person.

Julie Covington it is. She is the best in singing this song. All the others sound good, but Julie is the ultimate!
