He was using a metaphor, not a simile, he was probably talking about the effect that the song grows on you. Indie and rock is indie and rock, they still make classical music today. There are some great composers around!

I love this band and I've been listening to them for years but as a music theory major I can say this band comes nowhere near classical music. If you want some intricacy and dynamic most similar to classical music you've got to stick with your Radiohead-esque bands. From an indie standpoint try The Appleseed Cast, particularly off of their Mare Vitalis album. Pure genius

I love this band. They kind of creep up on you. When you first hear them they sound a bit boring then the complexity of it all hits you. It's like modern classical music.
