Did you even listen to the speech? He specifically says the MIC has "spiritual" influence on us and we can't let it "endanger our liberties or democratic processes". This wasn't about us spending too much on defense; it's about having large corporations that profit off war and put people in power to keep the money flowing!

He didn't warn against the "military industrial complex" he was pointing out the uniqueness of the US maintaining a large post war military (thanks to our ww2 "allie" uncle joe stalin). He was pointing out in a circumspect way(for political reasons) that there were a lot of spending programs in the US budget that were there because of politcal inertia (spending in motion tends to stay in motion) and would hope that wouldn't be true for military spending. US spends 4% GDP on defense now. 10% JFK
