Well, you're right as far as the 16th amendment. But "cherry picked"? hardly. I can give you many more of such quotes.Furthemore, it is ironic that the teabaggers should pick Thomas paine as a spokesman, the most "socialist" (fair) of them all.I would suggest, for your introduction to US History, a reading of Thomas Paines, "Agrarian Justice". But also read some of the many letters between Jefferson and Madison.If there is anyone that "cherry picks", it's the wingnuts.

yet in the constitution prior to the 16th amendment we did not allow for the direct taxation of citizens. Fair would be to rise and fall on the basis of your own merits. Your quote is cherry picked; the founders we not anything close to socialists.

Even Liberty comes with a price tag. Taxes are what pays for your liberty as well as the "socialist" roads, sidewalks, libraries, defence department, etc.

I think people being able to freely engage in efforts to better their life is fair.I think people being able to reap the benefits of their labor is fair.I think that property being as important to freedom as free speech is fair.
