tabooQ

I'm fascinated by the open dialogue Youtube fosters. And I'd like to know more.I am part of a team of researchers doing an ethnography of YouTube culture for a class at Kansas State University taught by Dr. Michael Wesch. We are creating a video documentary of YouTube that will be posted to YouTube at the conclusion of our research. We will also be writing papers and giving conference presentations on this research. To see our work in progress, visit our blog at http://... If you have any questions or concerns you may contact Dr. Michael Wesch at mike.wesch@gmail.com or Dr. Rick Scheidt, Chair, Committee on Research Involving Human Subjects, 203 Fairchild Hall, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS 66506, (785) 532-3224.

Spamming unnecessary stuff such as promotions of personal videos that are unrelated to the topic of the discussion. Basically, spam.

Every community in the *real* world has each taboo. For example, christian people don't talk about pornography, and chinese girls don't show her feet. But here on Youtube there are people for every part of the world, it's a global community and that make people to look at things that are a taboo in their own *real* communities. Maybe sites like this one will make us realize someday that we are not different as we normally think. And taboos will exist only as definition in sociology books...

Thank you. I think you're right. flagging and breaking terms of service must definitely be signs that a taboo has been committed.
MaKMelman (March 29, 2007 at 4:00 am)
Ah. I think I understand your concern. But I'm engaging in participant observation. I particularly believe that you cannot understand a person until you have participated in their world. Walked with him/her, etc. I also want to get youtubers direct opinions of themselves, (the insider's perspective) so that I don't fall into the misunderstanding that often comes from having only an outsider's perspective of events. That's why I like to pose direct questions-- to hear the insider's perspective.
MaKMelman (March 29, 2007 at 3:51 am)
Absolutely. I've got a couple video topics in mind, and a little editing experience. I hope I can engage people better in the future.

Thank you for your comment. Are you an Anth or sociology major? I'd really appreciate more comments in the future. Also, I understand what you mean about criteria for social interactions. I'll be posting more vlogs very soon, so people can get to know me a little better. Two types of vlogs: serious ones about Digital Ethnography topics, and the fun ones where i just talk about my life, thoughts, etc. Because I've found that I really love vlogging.

In my opinion, you haven't committed a taboo here unless one of your videos gets deleted. ;) If your videos get flagged, at least SOMEONE thought so, but still not necessarily, because it's still accessible and a lot of those things can be labeled as such based on opinions... Otherwise, I think pretty much everything is fair game here until an account or a video gets deleted, and that's usually because of Terms of Service being broken.

Among other things, that means ++ quality sound, editing,&⇑ imaginative ways of asking questions.... ;-)

Your question --what's taboo in YouTubeLand-- is good (anth-wise). But YouTubeLand has implicit criteria -- like any society -- for social interactions. It's a visually and aurally rich place, it's more than web-cams&typepads. You're still at the stage of lingistic&cultural infancy (no raz, all participant observers begin this way). You'll get more meaningful data on YouTubian Taboos when you show YouTubians that you are culturally and linguistically competent in YouTubeYak.
