It is insanely expensive. However, foreigners that do not reside in the country can buy a Japan Rail Pass for the Shinkansen and all JR Lines. It is a good deal.

Thank you, I bought it in Hawaii 2 years ago, at Macy's, go figure. Japan is not for everyone, so love it and some hate it. I hope you have or plan to visit before deciding to make a big move.Regarding the LA job, the salary is too low, so I will pass it up, but I am looking at other options.
