Actually, it's extremely common for gesso to be used in art journals. It's become known in recent years for its uses beyond priming. It's more translucent than white paint,&also has the primer quality of adding texture, which makes it ideal for layering in art journals.

The gesso is actually supposed to go on the BOTTOM. It seals the paper or canvas like primer to get the surface ready to accept paint and other media. It also strengthens the paper. It is NOT the same as white paint, which is what the girl in this video seems to be using it for.
