ANCHOR:CERN's large hadron collider is set to launch this Wednesday. To celebrate, a trainee at the CERN laboratories has created a rap video detailing the "Big Bang" experiments the collider will carry out. To her surprise however, the video has become a huge Internet hit. Here's more on the story.STORY:A trainee at Europe's Nuclear Research center, also known as CERN, has become famous for her "CERN Rap". The rap video explains in rhymes the Large Hadron Collider that CERN are due to launch on Wednesday, September 10. Cate McAlpine, better known as Alpinekat on the web, wrote and produced the clip, which has already scored over 800,000 hits on YouTube. At just under 5 minutes long, it starts with physicists in white blouses dancing 100 meters underground in the LHC tunnel, to the lyrics, "27 kilometers of tunnel underground, designed with mind to send protons around. A circle that crosses through Switzerland and France, 60 nations contribute to scientific advance."[Cate McAlpine, Rapping Scientist]:"I was hoping it might make it into a few physics classrooms, and maybe some people would see it randomly online and think "Ah, a large hadron collider! Kind of cool in a nerdy way!"The clip explains in simple rhymes and words what the Large Hadron Collider experiment will consist of, and what it hopes to discover. The LHC experiment is aimed at recreating conditions similar to just after the Big Bang by colliding two beams of particles at close to the speed of light. When the LHC runs at full intensity, approximately six hundred million collisions will take place every second. The aim of the experiment is to understand the fundamental forces of nature and the sub-atomic particles that make up all matter in the Universe. However, critics say the LHC may create black holes which could suck in the Earth. But McApline disagrees.[Cate McApline, Physicist]:"There are cosmic rays that come to the earth pretty frequently and they are much higher energy than anything theLarge Hadron Collider is going to be able to create. So if we were going to get sucked up by a black hole, it would have happened by now!"Only time will tell who is right.
She looks like the collider was actually a time machine, and she went back to get some clothes and a makeover in the 80s, then came back to make this video
