I know what you mean. A lot of comics that reach the golden years just don't have the 'snap' in their jokes like they did in their heyday and almost seem to garner laughs out of respect.Rickles is a most notable exception as this interview with Letterman demonstrates. You can see clips of him 40 or 50 years previous and he is just as funny with his caustic style of humour then as now.
