Thanks should have known that one. I don't think anyone could either then or now match the comedic timing of Johnny. I remember numbers of times when a guest or an animal did something and it was that much funnier because of his reaction. Of course, we know that that bit with the tomahawk in I think '62 or something like that is still recorded as the longest sustained laughter in tv history.

The "guy between Jack and Don" was Joey Bishop - a comedian and actor, and one of the lesser members of the Rat Pack. Bishop had his own show late night talk show on ABC against Carson a few years before this. His sidekick was Regis Philbin, BTW - Rickles DOES do his act today - he recently had an HBO special...he doesn't appear as often as as he used to, but he's in his mid 80s and semi-retired.

Love Johnny Carson. Loved the anniversary shows. Hate that He is gone.. Miss both Johnny and the times he was on. So much talent. Hollywood is not the same these days.

Benny was always a sucker for great timing: Notice how the timing, not the content, of what Rickles says has Benny collapsed against Ed McM. He even says at one point he doesn't know what it means, and he is still dying with laughter. The only person I ever saw make him laugh harder was George Burns, the greatest master of timing there has ever been.
