July 2007How green are biofuels made from palm oil? In Indonesia, forests are being felled to make way for palm oil plantations. Deforestation is now the world's second greatest cause of greenhouse gas."This is very bad", laments Greenpeace representative, Hapsoro, looking around a palm oil plantation. In this area alone, 8,000 hectors of forest have been replaced with plantations. Last year, more than a billion tones of carbon dioxide was released into the environment by forest fires, caused to clear land for plantations. Indonesia has high hopes palm oil will become the new green gold. "We want to be the number one exporter", states forestry minister Ms Ka'ban.Produced by SBS/DatelineDistributed by Journeyman Pictures

We weren't which was the problem. No one knew the existing consequences when the logging industry took off. Gradually, it wasn't until later that people started learning the consequences of deforestation. Today, things are different than they were decades ago and the knowledge of the effect of deforestation is present. If Indonesia was any smarter, they would be wise to learn the mistakes of our past and not repeat them ever again.

why blame us? what were you thinking when you destroyed your forest?

No matter how you look at it, the environmental apocalypse that is killing the Indonesian rainforest affects the entire world.

"Europe and other countries" should start by reforestating their OWN forests before pointing fingers at developing countries.

The deforestation is very disturbing, I wish Europe and other countries would try to boycott importing oil from Indonesia. Biofuel itself is not a bad idea, it's where you get them and how that is devastating the environment.
