This is my tribute to those who fought in World War One, in fact all vets of all wars. As a solider, I know the waste of war first hand and WW I was one of the most wasteful. But at the same time, I know you must fight for your freedoms.Eric Bogle wrote the song, Green Fields of France, also known as No Man's Land. Piet Chielens, coordinator of the In Flanders Fields War Museum in Ypres, Belgium, once checked all 1,700,000 names that are registered with the Commonwealth War Commission. He found no less than ten Privates William McBride. The song is covered by the group Dropkick Murphy.
so sad. our ancestors were betrayed and butchered by their leaders. Unforgotten. Unforgiven.

Interestingly none of the 11 William McBrides fit the description in the song. 2 William McBrides an 1 W. McBride died in 1916. One was 19 but he has no gravestone and is instead inscribed on the Thiepval Memorial. The other two are buried but one was 21 and the other's age is unknown.

tbh willie mcbride was there, so was john smith, and jim walters. It was a name. it could be anyone on that name on the grave he chose to sit by,that's the beauty. the song is a tribute to everyone that died fighting

I never once stated in my comment about the man's son so u really need to read my comment again. I also dictated my comment to the idiot that stated that Willie McBride didn't exist when there have been several accounts that there were 11 Willie McBrides that fought in WW1 and I happened to mention VC holder Private Willie McBride of the 36th Ulster Division.

The man who wrote this song wasn't born until 1944, so how do you think his son was killed in WWI?
MissVK85(June 18, 2009 at 4:25 pm)
Brave VC holder Willie McBride paid the ultimate sacrifise to save his regiment the 36th Ulster Division by throwin himself on top of a hand grenade that prematurely went off in the box that carried them. SOME FOLK NEED TO GET THERE FACTS RIGHT BEFORE COMMENTING!!IN THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.R.I.P WILLIE MCBRIDELEST WE FORGET36TH ULSTER DIVISIONFOR KING AND COUNRTY
