Interesting video. Phnom Penh of course has long been much wealthier than the rest of the nation (today the signature vehicle might be said to be the Govt Black lexus 4wd) but a friend recalls that inflation adjusted, teacher were paid about 10 times more back in the 1960s than they are today. Some comments on this baord suggest that Cambodia hasn't "moved on." I disagree, but it's bloody hard when a whole generation was ripped to shreds.

Dear our Cambodian country men! Be alert! the Vietnamese are coming to stay our land and take over like they did before! Please ask our leaders; do not make same mistake!! We should unit with the same culture like out Thai and Laotian brothers to fight the Vienamese!!

I honestly doubt that. This doesn't necessarily look like propaganda to me, but rather a documentary that the French were able to preserve. Cambodia isn't economically prospering as much today as it would have had the potential to if the Khmer Rouge hadn't interfered.

When people say Cambodia is in a better condition now than it was in the 1960s -IT'S A LIE! People were poor, but they lived peacefully then. I'd rather live poor and peacefully in the countryside than be rich and suffer quietly under communism for life anyway like it is today.

I just spent a couple weeks in Cambodia and went through to vietnam yesturday. It is a very safe place to be, and easy to travel through. Although the country is badly littered and may look dodgy to you the people are very friendly and helpful. Most speak english and they mainly use the u.s dollar so getting about is easy. Common sense is advised when traveling the side streets at night...likewise for anywhere you go. Dont be scared to travel there, its not bad.

People need to stop blaming every single nation that surrounds cambodia...what's really sad is that these racist grudges continue today! Where Vietnam, China, Laos, Thailand, etc, and all the rest of Asia has moved on, accepted their historical faults, cambodia still is stuck in the past grudges and refuses to move on.

Many Americans (the majority of the public who weren't in the government) were largely unaware of the ongoings in cambodia at the time. You can't blame them for not interfering in something they were unaware of.

If you're being sarcastic, it really was in poor taste. If not, seriously, think it over...if your history experienced something like that and others supported the roots of all your pain, how would you feel?
ThaiLakornFanatic(March 29, 2009 at 3:43 am)
It's true, but neither pol pot or Americans can be blamed 100%; both had major roles in the destruction of a nation. It was not a proud moment in American history.

That's true...I'm scared to go there too...all the thieves, corruption, goverment conspiracies, etc.
